I first read Troll Fell, and Troll Mill soon after, when I was in 8th grade. For many years I searched for the final entry into the trilogy to no avail, until one day I happened to find this collected edition on Amazon. To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. I am a major fan of editions such as this, as they allow me to carry all of the books in one simply copy. Though i'm in college now, my enjoyment of these books hasn't diminished even a little bit and it was good to finally read the final novel. Anyone who is even a little interested in any of the three books should definitely pick up this edition to save some money and time.

In terms of the books themselves, the author does a good job of blending folklore and myth with reality as it was many centuries past. The first book in the collection is Troll Fell, which focuses on Peer Ulfson, a young boy whose father has just passed away. Though the expectation is that he'll be staying with friends of his father in the village where he grew up, everything changes when his uncle arrives to take him, and his father's money, away. Though Peer hopes that his uncles, as there are two of them, will treat him like family and help care for him, it soon becomes clear that this will not be the case, as they beat him and force him to work himself to exhaustion with minimal food. In the end, Peer even discovers that his uncles are planning to sell him off to the trolls in order to gain a little gold. Though things are bleak for him all is not lost, as Peer is aided by the new friends he makes one he arrives in the village where his uncles live, and together they manage to thwart the evil plan.

The second novel in the trilogy, Troll Mill, is set shortly after the first one. Now being the last of his kin left, Peer decides to take charge of things and to run his family's mill on his own, in order to make something of himself, and perhaps even to impress his best friend Hilde, who was instrumental in helping Peer stop his uncles. What is Peer to do however when a woman in the village leaves her recently born baby with him and disappears, seemingly into the sea?! Is the mill really haunted and running on its own at night? And what of the trolls whom Peer came so close to being sold off to? This second volume picks up all the beats and motions from the first, while at the same time showing growth in each of the main characters.

The final entry into the series is Troll Blood, which departs in both tone and setting by having Peer and Hilde set off on a journey to the land of Vinland, which by all accounts seems to be North America. While a possible war with the natives awaits them, it is no more dangerous than the numerous perils of life on the sea. This is by far the most unique book of the three, abandoning many elements of the first two books in favor of something new altogether. However it remains just as mystifying and interesting, and the question of just how much power magic has in this world remains prevalent.

The books provide a good amount of history, mythology, and fantasy, more than enough for any imagination to process and I would absolutely reccomend this volume to readers of all ages.

I read Troll Fell and liked it so much I kept an eye out for a sequel. Got it Troll Mill. And then there's Book 3 in this trilogy, Troll Blood, which sends young Peer a-viking clear to the New World. Fortunately for readers of historical fantasy, the Troll Trilogy is now available in one volume, West of the Moon.

These books are just as much steeped in folklore as they are in the realities of life in Norway several centuries ago. The trolls are particularly gruesome, for those of you who want a shiver with your adventure.

--In Troll Fell, Peer Ulffson is orphaned and sent to live with his horrible uncles, who concoct a plan to sell him to the troll king as a wedding gift. With the help of his friend Hilde, a cranky Nis (think Brownies or even Dobby the House Elf, only not), and possibly the dubious, terrifying Granny Greenteeth, Peer can find out just what his uncles are up to, especially when their plan changes unexpectedly. You've always wanted to attend a troll wedding feast, haven't you?

--In Troll Mill, Peer's evil uncles might be back, and what's to be done with a baby that appears to be half selkie? New encounters with trolls plus Peer's changing feelings toward Hilde occupy this second volume, which may even be better than the first.

--Troll Blood takes Peer and Hilde across the sea in a Viking boat, led by a man and his son whose violent ways will endanger them all, especially when they run afoul of the natives in Vinland (North America). Langrish impressively weaves Native American mythological creatures into this new tale of her brave young Norse twosome. And for the romantics among you, Hilde finally starts realizing that Peer is an amazing guy (though not till late in the book, mind you)!

Langrish makes her adventures feel as real and unpredictable as everyday life is. The Norsemen in Troll Blood are mostly disdainful of the Native Vinlanders, whom they call Skraelings, but an abandoned boy finds out otherwise, as does Peer when he runs into terrible trouble. Harald's murder of two young native men on a hunting expedition comes back to haunt him in the same way the ghost of a dead seafarer haunts Harald's father, Gunnar. And we get an interesting comparison between a Viking berserker and a creature from Native American legends, a variation of the wendigo.

Perhaps most intriguing of all is the author's handling of the woman with the titular troll blood in Book 3. A cold, selfish girl, Astrid is eventually revealed as a rich and troubled character. There's a dimensionality to the interactions of so many of these characters when it comes to their friendships, their family lives, their goals, and their struggles. It all adds a satisfying depth to Langrish's work.

While Hilde makes a gutsy companion, Peer is the character whose perspective dominates the books, and he is a thoroughly likable boy, full of equal parts determination and self-doubt.

Of course, the star of the show just might be the Nis, the odd and clever little creature who sometimes scolds and sometimes helps our heroes. Plus there's Peer's dog Loki, who's always up for some troll fighting.

Langrish's books are rich in language, adventure, and fantasy. It's particularly nice to read historical fantasy that's set somewhere other than in the British Isles. Norse folklore is a real treasure trove, as the Troll Trilogy demonstrates. You will also get a strong sense of what it was like to live in Norway all those centuries ago, from the building of sod houses to the snap of the sails.
