Setting: 1888 Copper Creek, Colorado, with a prologue ten years earlier...Wow! SWEET ANNIE was not only sweet as the title implies, but just a truly beautiful love story. From the very start it tugged at my emotions and touched a piece of my heart. I adored both Luke and Annie who were so utterly endearing that I couldn't help but fall in them with them almost instantly. These two quite honestly made me believe in soul mates and a love that only comes along once in a lifetime. And while their romance was very tender, it was also very sensual and filled with passion and is not a clean read. Any actual sex scenes occur after marriage however, and were written with beauty, depth, and not at all cheap.
Luke and Annie's road to happiness was definitely not without its obstacles though and along the way you'll experience their joy, hope, and pain right alongside them. The last twenty or so pages of this book was literally so heartbreaking that I practically felt their grief and cried my eyes out not once, but twice! I loved the fact that neither of them were perfect though and that they had fears and doubts just like the rest of us, but that they also had the courage to overcome anything life threw at them. In the end I would highly recommend this lovely and totally unforgettable historical romance and am ever so thankful I found it =)
NOTE: I am very surprised by the negative reviews for this book since I honestly don't see how anyone couldn't love it and I wanted to respond to a few of those comments. The 1-star review (which I didn't read all of) said this story wasn't romantic which I couldn't disagree with more. A 3-star review said Luke visited prostitutes, which was way before he and Annie ever started courting and in explanation of why he wasn't a virgin. The other 3-star review I wish I hadn't read since it gave away a major spoiler. To be fair it does say spoiler alert, but it came upon me quickly that I didn't have time to stop myself before I'd already read it.

great read with interesting characters! enjoyed the story a lot!
Couldn't put it down
It was a really sweet ,easy and clean book to read. I really enjoy reading simple romances once in a while. This book was vert well written.
Same characters appear in SECOND HAND WIFE
What a wonderfully sweet book. Brought tears to my eyes. I love reading books by Cheryl St. John. I really enjoyed the next book His Secondhand Wife also.
Dude Review this is about as innocent and pure love out in the west can be and that can either annoy people who are looking for more action/drama or can endear people to this particular love story all the more. For me personally, it couldn't have been more perfect. It's just a simple and hearty dose of love at the most innocent level especially from Annie's standpoint. I could practically hear old ladies hold their breath when Luke confessed he'd been around the block! I read this book after falling in love with the book that was written after this, His Secondhand Wife. Book books are uniquely awesome in their own respect and are must reads for Cheryl fans. I kept this on on the backburner for the lack of pure wild west action, but this story has it's own unique tale that'll pull at your heartstrings if are the sentimental type or appreciate reading about a beautiful simple kind of love. With a healthy dose of sexual tension, and a few sizzling (not too explicit - but my kindle was smokin) tumbles in bed, the book spent more time on the expression of love the characters had for each other that suited me just fine. So please don't hold back and definitely give this book a chance, it's a definite keeper for me and will be read again!
Though not one of the first books I've read by this author, it was one of the first books I fell in love with first and couldn't put down, Cheryl is a very good writer, which is rare because she has a written for both historical and modern romance as well as christian.
As for this story, even though Annie and Luke more or less were in 'in love at first sight' since they were kids and the story was a bit too quick to rush with the marriage in the middle of the book, I didn't mind it. I know they had they're own ups and downs as well as Annie's family with her walking and wanting to keep her a child and bound to a wheelchair. But for any nitpicks I may have had with the story I still felt it was one of my favorites of the author's and I would reread it again.
If you want to read a enjoyable, don't have to think too much story then this would be it. If anyone wonders this does have some intimate scenes, though not overly detailed, but between a married couple.
