The Secrets Between Us A Novel Thrity Umrigar 9780062442208 Books

Where to begin? It will help to first read "The Space Between Us" to have context tho' Ms. Umrigar does help the reader with a bit of background throughout. But why not allow yourself the richness of both books .. in order?

I started this book after an especially bad day (work, world issues, etc.) - hoping to 'escape' into it. I both couldn't read straight through nor put it down so pulled in was I. You know: the book you don't want to end but are afraid of the outcomes?

"The Secrets Between Us" is a reminder of the remarkable influence of one's birth, one's place of birth and one's circumstances, on one's life. "There but for the grace..." go I, I thought. And yet, as a woman growing older, I found the issues so critical. The invisibility of people who are old, of people of undeserved difficult circumstances, of life lived on the margins, because of perceptions.

How I loved seeing again each of the characters in this book .. well, ok .. not everyone but .. I do not want to write a spoiler! This book will will (re)awaken your humanity. Beautiful and meaningful dialogue throughout; it will draw you in and will cause you to reflect deeply and hopefully to act with greater compassion.

I am grateful to Thrity Umrigar for writing books that touch the soul and the heart and the brain.

The Secrets Between Us A Novel Thrity Umrigar 9780062442208 Books Reviews

Thrity Umigar is an excellent writer. She draws the reader into the story from the first page. Having read The Space Between Us, I was drawn to this novel also written by her. While this story does not disappoint, I felt I had walked through the slums of India with her already, and once was really enough. The story is compelling, sad, enlightening, but surprised me by ending too neatly. To anyone who has not yet read her work, I'm sure you will be captured by her style.
I loved Thrity Umrigar’s "The Space Between Us" that I read in 2010. I was surprised to see a sequel to this book. I had forgotten a lot about the first book but the author does weave in the past lives of the main characters so it does give you time to catch up. What follows is a beautifully rendered story of the bonds between women and the lengths they’ll go to in order to achieve their dreams. The author pulls no punches as she describes life in Mumbai. Her descriptions of the conditions in which poverty-stricken people are forced to live is an eye opening experience. I was devastated by the countless horrific things that happen to Bhima, Parvati, and the other women in the story. I love when an author is able to bring a location completely to life, and Thrity Umrigar excels in this field. I’ve never been to India but it is a country that fascinates me. This is a wonderful read about female friendship and the unbreakable bond that binds Bhima and Parvati. If you haven't read the first novel yet, I would encourage you to read both of them together.
How I love this author! I cried and cried at the end of this book wanting it to continue. All the characters were amazing, Bhima and Parvati are my heroines. Strong, nasty and vulnerable, each with their own secrets and regrets. I am sure Thrity will do another sequel and I cannot wait. Do not miss this wonderful enchanting book!
How does Bhima's past fit into her present? Are Bhima's misfortunes her greatest treasures? Are the secrets we carry a unifying element in our relationships? Is holding onto grief the way we legitimize the things we have lost or broken?

Thrity Umrigar takes you back to India where the first book, The Spaces Between Us, left off.
The Secrets Between Us allows you to peek into daily Indian life and culture through the eyes of two poor elderly females Bhima and Parvati.

Bhima is raising her granddaughter, Maya, after losing her own daughter to AIDS. Bhima struggles to put Maya through college and takes multiple jobs after being fired from the Dubash family. Bhima gets a small taste of independence, selling fruit in the marketplace and balancing housework for the rich while playing tug-of-war with the caste system in India. She watches Maya changing along with Mumbai but isn't sure how she fits into this picture.

Parvati has nothing except a large mass growth to call her own. Her secrets lay deep within the darkness of her past where only she alone can find them. Her health and life depend on selling six old cauliflower at the fruit market until Bhima and her develop a business plan. Tougher than nails, Parvati relies on her past to gather strength and courage in her present. She challenges religion, the culture, and her newfound companion Bhima.

The ending of this book was majestic. I hope she writes a third book for this series.
I have visited India and do not understand the caste system. I thank the author for letting me see the parts and people I tried to ignore. The story is lovely, but the emotions that went through me were as I said...powerful. In this time, it was the perfect awakening to be able to see that we are all the same. Exactly the same. Please read this book especially if you are young. I wish I had.
Sympathetic, lively, colorful, characters dominate the novel of women whose lives depend on the kindness and integrity of the men in their lives. Complex relationships cross culture, religion, ethnicity and class structure. Dire poverty resides in the midst of glittering wealth.
The central characters reside in the underbelly of the Mumbai. Each individual struggles to survive the unrelenting poverty, poverty that pulls one into a depth of misery that one can only overcome by the willingness to help another, with less than oneself.
Through the connecting relationships, the figures gain depth and reveal their different tragedies. The author puts forth the theme that an event, though tragic for one, opens opportunity for another. As the characters struggle to break the cycle of poverty, the ideas of entrepreneurship, social equality and justice take hold.
Although written as a sequel, the book stands easily on its own. The story flows smoothly and quickly despite the mild, pervasive melodrama.
